Kakadu Plum and Luminescine: The Natural Science Behind Affinage Products

Your clients are asking smarter questions about ingredients. Being able to answer confidently drives retail sales and builds loyalty. Here’s the science behind two of Affinage’s signature ingredients, in language you can use at the chair.

Kakadu Plum: Nature’s Most Concentrated Antioxidant

Kakadu Plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana) is native to Australia’s Northern Territory, used by Indigenous Australians for thousands of years. Its Vitamin C concentration is the highest of any known fruit — up to 100 times greater than an orange.

For hair, Vitamin C functions as a potent antioxidant, neutralising free radicals from UV, pollution, and heat styling. These free radicals degrade keratin, cause colour fade, and increase porosity. Kakadu Plum extract helps preserve structural integrity and colour vibrancy.

It’s standardised across every formula in our Australian-made Cleanse and Care range — consistent antioxidant protection regardless of which variant the client uses.

Luminescine: Light-Reflecting Conditioning

Luminescine is a key component of the Luminous Complex in Affinage Gloss Liquid Demi (made in our Italian colour laboratory). It smooths the cuticle to create a uniform, light-reflective surface — producing the high-gloss “glass” finish clients are requesting.

Combined with Aloe Vera (deep hydration, anti-inflammatory) and Quinoa Peptides (complete amino acid profile reinforcing hair protein), the Luminous Complex conditions during the colouring process — hair finishes in better condition than it started.

How to Talk About It at the Chair

Keep it simple. Try: “The products I’m using contain Kakadu Plum — an Australian superfruit with more Vitamin C than almost any other plant. It protects your colour from fading between visits.”

Or: “The gloss I’m applying has a conditioning complex that smooths the cuticle while it deposits colour — that’s why it’ll feel softer and shinier than a traditional toner.”

Clients don’t need a chemistry lecture. They need a confident, concise explanation connecting ingredient to visible benefit. That’s what drives the retail conversation.
